Marianne Matheny-Katz, one of Baltimore’s premier vocalists, plays with a band of top local jazz musicians: Vince Evans (piano), Craig Alston (sax), Tom Baldwin (bass), and Eric Kennedy (drums). The program is titled, “Rebirth of the Cool” and focuses on the era of “cool jazz” from 1959 through the 1960s. Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, and Dave Brubeck all released highly influential jazz albums during that time. These and other artists such as Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley, and Antônio Carlos Jobim dominated the sound of this period. In addition, jazz-infused pop from composers like Burt Bacharach entered the scene with tunes that would become jazz standards of the future. Matheny-Katz has performed frequently in Baltimore jazz clubs including the Patterson Park Concert series (seven times) and Baltimore’s Artscape, and throughout the Atlantic seaboard, including the Carlyle Club (Alexandria, VA), the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, New Jersey Jazz Festival, and Acton Jazz Café (near Boston). She is two-time winner of the Billie Holiday competition. Her 2014 CD Somewhere in Paradise has received significant nationwide airplay, and critics are singing her praises. Matheny-Katiz is not only an accomplished jazz vocalist but also a respected presenter and champion of jazz. She is the co-founder and host of Jazzway 6004 named by DownBeat magazine as one of the finest house concert venues in the country.
